Chapter 61: Something She Was Doing Wrong

After eating breakfast, Eve’s parents and her sisters left for the ceremony, while she kept her grandfather company. And when it was time for the Old man’s medication, Eve left him alone as he fell asleep.

There was nothing much to do in the house, and she lazied around all day.

In the evening, Eve was sitting on the balcony, staring at the gates. Her grandfather was inside with some guests and her parents hadn’t returned yet.

“Young Miss.” Her grandfather’s caregiver stood beside her. “Your grandfather is curious that you aren’t going home. He acts as if he’s happy but I think he’s worried about you. Are you sure you’re alright?”

“Sure. I’m perfectly fine.” Eve nodded. “Didn’t you say grandpa missed me a lot, the reason behind his illness? I’m here to ease his boredom.”

“That is a good thinking.” The caregiver smiled. “But I think what worries your grandfather the most is your husband.”

Eve’s lips twitched and she sighed. Ethan didn’t disturb her today, that was a relief. But her grandfather didn’t cease to mention him during breakfast, at lunch, and also during dinner.

“Jeff, I hope Grandpa didn’t send you here to investigate me.” She gave the guy a pointed look.

“N–Not at all, Young Miss. Don’t I have the right to ask about your well-being? I’ve been living here even before you were brought back to the family. That should make us familiar with each other, right?”

“I won’t buy that.”

“I’m speaking the truth, Young Miss. I’m only asking because I care about your happiness. You know you’re your grandfather’s favorite, and all his other grandchildren are not so down-to-earth.”

“Since you’ve said so, I’m afraid I can’t disagree.” Eve nodded. “But really, Jeff, I’m fine. I have been away for many months, I just miss my family a lot.”

The caregiver kept her company for some time, and he left her alone when her grandfather’s guests left.

Eve spent some more minutes on the balcony. She was dozing off when her parents’ car arrived.

While her mother walked past her into the house, her father and the twins hugged her.

“It is cold out here, Evelyn. Have you been waiting for us?” Her father scolded.

Eve shook her head. “I just wanted to have some fresh air, Dad.”

“Here.” Her father gave her a bag and Eve looked inside to find a sparkling purse inside as well as a small box. “Your sisters dragged me and your mother to a shopping mall. Your mother bought this for you. The wristwatch is from me.”

“Thanks, Dad.” Eve hugged him again.

“Mum bought a similar bag for us, Big Sis.”

“We also have the same kind of wristwatch.”

The twins showed her their bags and Eve laughed. “That’s so nice.”

“Come on girls, let’s go inside. Eve, you too,” her father said and they all followed him into the house.

On their way to their grandfather’s room, Eve met her mother walking out of the room and she stopped in front of her while the others entered inside.

“Mum, thank you for the gift,” she said softly. Her mother gave her a curt nod then walked past her, and Eve breathed out a sigh.

She joined the others inside the room and after bidding her grandfather goodnight, the girls followed her out of the room, living her father inside.

“Big Sis, you should have come to the wedding party with us. It was so fun.”

“Although Amelia’s husband is not as handsome as brother-in-law, he’s so rich and nice.”

“Amelia’s wedding dress was so beautiful. Big Sis, you almost look alike, I couldn’t believe my eyes.”

Amelia was Eve’s aunty’s only daughter. And due to the resemblance they shared with their mothers, people always said they looked alike. Eve was used to hearing that.

“Big Sis.” One of the girls broke her out of her thoughts. “Amelia asked us why you didn’t come.”

“Although you didn’t get along well in the past, she was sad that you didn’t attend her wedding.”

“Big Sis, we know Mum is always cold toward you, but you shouldn’t avoid her family.”

It wasn’t that Eve was avoiding her mother’s family. Just like her mother, they didn’t seem to be comfortable with her. And the reason behind that was still a mystery.

“Big Sis.” Her sisters stopped walking when they got close to her room. “We hope you can give Mum more time. Maybe she will smile at you someday.”

“Don’t worry about me, Girls. Believe me, I’m not angry with Mum.” Eve shook her head and smiled.

She was thirteen when she was brought here to the city, and it had been thirteen years after that. Wasn’t thirteen years long enough to mend any kind of relationship? Besides, it wasn’t like she was complaining.

“Erhm, Big Sis.” The twins exchanged glances and went on.

“W–We’re so sorry, we can’t spend the night with you.”

“We’ll go to school tomorrow, and Mum wants us to wake up early.”

“I don’t mind, Girls. Please go ahead.” Eve bid them goodnight and hugged them both.

She walked inside her room then leaned against the door and blew out a sigh. After getting ready for bed, she brought the sparkling purse out and admired it.

‘This is designer made.’ it should cost millions.

Eve’s fingers traced the outline of the diamond-studded designs, her mind wandering to the first gift she’d received from her mother.

The high-heeled shoes were as beautiful. She was so ecstatic that day that she didn’t think twice before hugging the woman, but that was one of her biggest mistakes.

Her mother simply pushed her away and dusted her dressed then walked away, the way she always did.

Eve dropped the purse on the bedside table and entered the bathroom to take another bath. She spent hours washing herself again and again until her skin reddened and burned.

It was two in the morning when she limped out of the bathroom and fell on the bed. Her eyes lingered on the ceiling but sleep did not come.

She tossed and turned on the bed, until the wee hours of the morning.

Was there something she was doing wrong? Where and how would she get the answers?
