The President's Daring Wife
Chapter 74: A Business Trip
Chapter 76
“We’ve taken all the orange juice out of the house, Madam.” Elena entered the bedroom with a tray of food. “As you’ve requested, there is only pineapple juice.”
“Thank you, Elena.” Eve took the food tray and placed it on her lap. She glanced at the empty space beside her on the bed and couldn’t help but sigh inside.
Of all days and weeks, Ethan had to go on an emergency business trip. She’d been happy that she’d successfully coaxed him to spend the whole week with her cuddling, but the next day after the incident, he just had to disappear.
“Why do you look sad, Madam?” Elena sat beside her. “I hope it’s not about the Young Master again.”
“Who else could it be?” Eve grumbled and slowly ate her food. “Ethan is seeking trouble, Elena, why couldn’t he go with me?” After all, she was his secretary.
“Well, you should understand the Young Master’s reasoning, Madam. How could he travel with you when you’d just been kidnapped recently?”
“That isn’t enough reason.” Eve pouted. Besides, she’d assured him again and again that she was fine.
She finished the food on the tray and drank the pineapple juice. “This is better, Elena. From now on, I’ll only drink pineapple juice.”
“As you wish, Madam.” Elena took the food tray and stood up. “Madam.” She went on. “You appear to be moody recently. I guess it’s not related to the Young Master alone.”
Ethan was the only person on her mind. Who else could she be mad at?
“I just want Ethan to come back soon.” She breathed out softly.
“Tomorrow’s the weekend, Madam. Maybe he will return tonight or tomorrow morning.”
“I hope so.” Eve nodded. Ethan never told her when he would return during their phone calls which were nonetheless short.
He would only call to inquire how she was or if she was home. And after getting his answers, he’d simply hang up.
Really, they still had a long way to go to being a romantic couple.
Elena turned around to leave for the door, but she hesitated before turning back. “Erm, Madam…” She said softly. “Are you sure you don’t want to go to the–”
“Urgh, I told you I’m not sick, Elena.” Eve already knew what the woman was about to say, as no day went by without her asking if she would like to visit the hospital.
“But it’s for your own good.” Elena dropped the tray and gave her a worried look. “See, you’re losing weight and your skin is getting paler. You also won’t come down for your food until I’d have to bring it up here and force you to eat it. Isn’t this a symptom of an ill person?”
“I’m not sick, Elena. Stop overthinking it.” Eve shook her head. Elena wanted to hold her hand and she quickly hid it under the sheet covering her.
“You also threw up many times, Madam.”
“I ate some bad food the other way. It’s nothing to worry about. I don’t throw up anymore, I’m completely fine.” As Eve tried to explain, she put on a simple smile. “Now stop worrying over me. I’m not a baby, and I’ll take immediate action when I sense a threat to my health. If I feel sick, I’ll let you know, Elena.”
Elena stood up and sighed heavily. “Okay, Madam. I hope you look after your health well.”
“I will.” Eve widened her smile.
After Elena left the room, she picked up her phone from the bedside table and decided to play some games. Then she paused and logged out of the app before dialing Ethan’s number.
The other line was busy. Who was he on the phone with?
Eve dropped her phone aside, shaking her head. She lay on her stomach and played with the pillow while groaning now and then.
Then that strange sensation built up in her chest. She sprang up and rushed into the bathroom then emptied out all the contents in her stomach.
“Urgh! I’m so miserable.” Eve staggered out of the bathroom and plopped on the bed. Her phone rang and her hand wandered for it.
“Who is it?” She mumbled.
“It’s me, Eve. What have you been up to?”
“Huh?” Eve glanced at the contact’s display name before placing the phone back on her ear. “Is that what you’re supposed to ask me, Honey? Don’t you know how lonely it is here? I’m drowning in loneliness for goodness sake.”
“I saw your missed call.”
“Uhuh. I decided to call you and hear your voice since you didn’t want to call me today. Tell me, is that a crime, Ethan!?”
Ethan was silent from the other end before his soft voice came. “You’re acting weird. Are you sure you’re alright, Eve?”
“If I wasn’t fine, would I be speaking with you right now?”
“Eve–”
“Damnit, Ethan. You’re getting on my nerves!” Eve yelled. A beeping sound came from the other end and she stared at the phone in shock. Ethan had hung up on her ‘Urgh.’
She threw the phone aside and hit her head on the pillow several times. After some time, that strange sensation built up again and she rushed into the bathroom and threw up.
Evening descended slower than she’d anticipated. There were more stars in the sky tonight, and the moon shone brightly.
Eve lay on the bed like a lifeless fish. Her eyes were fixed on the window and she would rip out the wool inside one of the pillows now and then.
Ethan did not come back tonight. Did she have to bask in the loneliness till tomorrow? ‘Urgh.’ she threw the pillow aside then picked up another one.
Her phone rang and her eyes strayed to her side. Ethan was calling her. Eve’s heart jolted back to life and she quickly answered it.
“Don’t worry, Honey. I’m not mad at you for yelling at me. As you can see, I have a generous heart and I forgive easily.”
“When did I yell at you?” Ethan sounded confused.
“Argh! Didn’t you yell at me a while ago during the phone call!?” Eve screamed.
“I didn’t,” Ethan denied instantly. “Are you sure you’re alright, Eve? You’re too moody nowadays.”
“So what if I’m moody? Aren’t you the cause of that? All you needed to do was take me on the trip with you and you refused. If I’m not moody because of that, I’d be hurting my pride.”
“I called to tell you something important,” Ethan said and she went silent.
“The business trip is extended. I won’t be returning tonight or the weekend. I’ll spend another week.”
“Ah!” Eve yelped and shuffled up. “Don’t you dare do that to me, Ethan. How can you say you’re not coming back?”
“A lot of things need to be taken care of here. It’s not in my power.”
“Of course, it is in your power. You own the company and you can attend to it whenever you want. Are you prioritizing your business over me, Ethan?”
“Eve, relax…”
“That’s it, I’m hanging up. And don’t you ever dare call me, Mr. Anderson. Don’t even dream about stepping foot in this house when you return from that stupid business trip.”
Eve hung up and tossed the phone aside. Her stomach grumbled nonstop and she pushed the sheets down her body with her legs then swayed out of the room.
Her head pounded and her body felt light. On her way downstairs, her vision suddenly became blurry and the next thing she saw was darkness.
