Chapter 80: Just A Baby

Eve stilled for a few seconds and she avoided the woman’s scrutinizing eyes. “Erm, what made you guess that, Elena?” She fiddled with her hands and sat on the bed.

“I’m not guessing. It is obvious, Madam.”

“Come on, Elena. You’re overthinking again.” Eve tried to force her a smile. “If I was pregnant, aren’t you the first person I’ll tell?”

“I am a woman, Eve. And I’ve experienced similar symptoms.” Elena sat on a chair, facing her. “If you’re right about what the doctor said, then they must have made a wrong diagnosis. I advise you to go see another doctor.”

“The doctor didn’t make any wrong diagnosis.” Eve shook her head. “You know my nature, and you know how eager I am to get pregnant. If it was positive, don’t you think I would be throwing a party by now?”

“Let me see your hand.”

“Why, Elena?” Eve shifted away.

“Madam, let me see those drugs the doctor prescribed for you.”

“Urgh, seriously.” Eve put on an offended look. “I implore you to please respect my privacy, Elena. I’ve told you it is just a minor illness and that’s the whole story!”

Eve didn’t intend her tone to be harsh, but it was too late. The words had already spilled out. She covered her mouth and stared at the woman’s shocked expression.

“I– I’m so sorry, Madam. Please forgive my mistake.” Elena scurried up and apologized. “I promise I’ll never intrude your privacy.”

“Come back… Elena.” The words died in Eve’s throat. The Stewardess had already left the room.

She let out a loud groan and her back hit the bed. Eve spread her arms wide and stared up at the ceiling. She was a mess. A complete mess.

Some minutes went by and she stood up then walked into the closet. After changing into her pajamas, she left the closet then picked up her bag and headed out of the bedroom.

Eve walked down the hallway and stopped at the study room. She pushed the door open then glanced back before stepping inside.

After sitting on Ethan’s chair, she brought the bulky document out of her bag and turned on his computer.

Eve tried several possible password combinations before she found the right numbers. Her birthday.

She shook her head and smiled, then logged into his profile on the company’s website.

Eve typed in the content of the document. Seconds turned into minutes and minutes turned into hours. She was halfway through the document but her knuckles ached and her eyelids got heavy.

She saved the file then turned off the computer and stood up.

Eve put the document into her bag before staggering out of the study room, yawning. She walked into the bedroom and found her phone ringing.

“Hello.” She answered the phone and placed it on her ear.

“Where have you been, Eve? I’ve been calling you since.” Ethan’s voice came from the other end.

Eve dropped her bag and sat on the bed. “I was in the bathroom. I didn’t hear it ringing.”

“You were taking a bath?” Ethan sounded confused. “This late, Eve?”

Eve glanced at the bedside clock. It was one in the morning. “I– I suddenly woke up and felt dirty. I needed to wash up, Ethan. Why did you call now? What if I was asleep? Did you plan to disturb me in the middle of the night?”

Ethan didn’t say a word for a few seconds and Eve could swear she heard him sigh. “It has been hours since I started calling you. Have you been in the bathroom for so many hours?”

‘Uh.’ Eve caught her tongue and chewed at her fingers. “Erm, Honey. Ah, my phone was on silent. I only noticed it was ringing when I came out of the bathroom and–”

“Eve.” Ethan didn’t let her speak further. “You went to the company today.”

Who the hell told him that? Was it the driver?

“I– I was so bored at home, Honey. If I didn’t go out and feed my eyes, I would die of loneliness.”

“Did you go somewhere else?”

“Yeah, I went to a hospital, but only to get some medication for the fever. Don’t worry, Ethan, I told you I’d never go back to the driving lesson. At least, not soon.”

“Mmm.” Ethan made a sound.

“Is that the only reason why you called?” Eve asked carefully.

“No,” Ethan replied immediately. “There’s something I must tell you.”

“W–What is that?” Eve didn’t know why she was suddenly apprehensive. In fact, slight guilt popped out of nowhere and crept up her heart.

“The trip is extended again. I won’t come back this week. I’ll return another week.”

“Really?” Eve bit her lips. “Th–That’s so sad. Are you facing any difficulty at work, Ethan?”

“Not at all. Some of the employees are troublesome. There are many things I have to take care of. But I have everything under control.”

“That’s great. I trust you, Honey.” Eve chortled. “Just don’t overwork yourself.”

Ethan didn’t reply for a while… And when his voice came again, he sounded confused. “You sound cool about this. Why aren’t you mad, Eve?”

“I don’t see why I should be mad at you.” Eve lay down and played with the bedsheet. “I look up to you, Ethan. You’re a hardworking man. Most girls are unlucky to have lazy husbands. I should be grateful to the heavens.”

“Eve.” The confusion in Ethan’s voice grew. “This is unlike you.”

“Forget about last time. I admit it, I yelled. I was just too sad and lonely. Stop thinking far, I’m happy from the bottom of my heart.”

“You’re happy that I won’t return soon?”

“Uhuh.” Eve nodded but quickly slapped her mouth. “No no no, I’m not happy of course. But as a good wife, I can’t distract you from your work. If I demand you to be with me all the time, how are we going to survive in the future?”

“Mmmm.” Ethan made a sound of agreement. “About the hospital–”

“I took the medication and I’m feeling better already. It’s nothing to worry about. It was just a minor fever.”

“Okay. Make sure you eat well. And don’t go out in the cold weather.”

“Awwn, my hubby’s so sweet.” Eve giggled. “I wonder what it will feel like if we finally have a child. Will you still care about me this way?”

“A child?” Ethan didn’t sound pleased.

“Uhuh?” Eve’s smile faltered. “You don’t want a baby?”

“No, Eve.” The man sounded serious.

“E–Ethan.” Eve sat up properly on the bed. “W–Why don’t you want a baby? Don’t tell me you’re…”

“Are you serious about having just a baby, Eve?” Ethan cut her off. “I want babies, Evelyn. Just a baby won’t be enough.”
