Chapter 100 Deserves A Second Chance
Oh, If only that was possible.
How Violet wished that would happen.
If Becca had the power to end her marriage with Clyde, she would have done it on the first day.
“How disappointing, you can't. And I'm unfortunately stuck with your son forever!” Violet shot back.
She didn't stop walking and entered the house.
To make sure the crazy woman didn't come after her, she locked herself inside the guest room.
She could hear commotions coming from the living room.
She could hear Clyde’s voice.
She could hear the two women speaking with him.
Their voices weren't low and his mother's command resounded in the house.
“It is time to fulfill your promise, Son. Remember you and Cora have been betrothed since you were young.”
“Who does that in this generation?” Clyde sounded annoyed. “Without evidence, I don't believe you.”
“Well, if I provide evidence, will you divorce that filthy girl and marry Cora instead?”
“No!” Clyde didn't waste a second to reply. “I'll, instead, sue you and Dad for doing that without my consent.”
“You might as well sue your grandfather too!” His mother screamed. “Because he played a part in it.”
“Don't bring Grandpa into this. Mum, stop any tricks you're up to. Take Cora and leave.”
“No, I won't. Cora has to at least live here from now on. Her family has suddenly brought up the topic of your engagement; we definitely won't disappoint them.”
Wait a minute.
Was Cora really engaged with Clyde?
Violet thought Becca had been bluffing until she just mentioned Cora's family.
“If so, what do you want me to do with my wife!?” Clyde sounded as if he wanted to explode. “Won't you stop this drama already, Mum?”
“Violet is just a filthy orphan with no origins. What benefits will she bring to you?”
“Violet has origins,” Clyde replied. “Even if she doesn't, I won't leave her because you asked me to-”
“You!” Becca stammered before she coughed rapidly. “Arguing with you will only cause me a heart attack. I've already concluded that Cora will live in this place. If you decline one more time, you're no longer my son and I'll make sure you never see your daughter again because I'll use my power to take her.”
“You- Mum!” Clyde sounded helplessly annoyed as the woman stomped away.
Violet rolled her eyes.
Becca didn't mean her threats, did she?
She wouldn't be able to take Mimi away.
After the arguments died down, however, she came out to the living room to find Cora making herself comfortable on the couch.
Clyde towered in front of her, giving her a deadly dark look while Cora only smiled in return.
“There's no use in getting angry, Honey. Your parents want me, why can't you accept our fate?”
“If another filthy word leaves your mouth, I'll snap your neck,” Clyde warned her. “You're such a shameless vixen.”
“Call me whatever you want.” She stood up and dragged her luggage upstairs. “In the end, you and I belong together, Clyde.”
Cora's footsteps receded.
Violet couldn't believe it. Cora was really going to live here.
Clyde noticed her and he turned around. “Don't worry. I'll make sure she doesn't spend the night here.”
Did that matter?
Cora's stay or her supposed engagement with Clyde wasn't her problem, right?
“I don't think I care, Mr. Crawford.” Violet shrugged. “It's not my home, after all.”
But she was suddenly angry.
Staying in the same proximity with Cora was definitely something she never looked forward to.
Cora was evil enough to put her baby's life in danger. She might do worse.
That evening, she avoided the couple as much as she could.
Mimi was so exhausted from playing all day with her toys after returning from school. She slept early and Violet stayed by her daughter's side.
Yet, the urge to sleep was far from her eyes as the thought about Cora kept on resurfacing.
She didn't go out for dinner but Ava, who had brought her food to Mimi's room, had gisted her about how provocatively Cora had dressed.
“She's barely wearing anything, Young Miss. I bet she's planning to seduce the Young Master.”
Ava had pouted, looking even more angry than Violet should have been.
“Ms. Reid covets your position, Young Miss. Are you just going to let her be?” Ava had added before Violet sent her out.
She wasn't supposed to worry about Cora being with Clyde.
Lying close to her daughter, Violet felt much more content.
Yet, there was an emptiness inside her chest which she couldn't fathom its source.
The thought of Cora crawling inside the Master bedroom made her uncomfortable.
The idea that Clyde might actually be seduced by Cora again made an old fear resurface.
Violet closed her eyes and that nightmare returned.
She was on her way to Clyde's office, happy to announce her pregnancy when she heard their voices.
The hurt was fresh in her heart. The feeling of betrayal acted up.
It appeared the scar hadn't healed yet. Maybe it would never heal.
Violet woke up in the middle of the night, her forehead covered with sweat.
She patted her chest, sighing inside as she glanced sideways at her baby lying beside her.
As she stroked Mimi's hair carefully so as not to wake her up, she couldn't help but think about the future.
Someday, she wouldn't be here with Clyde.
What if he won over her fight for Mimi's custody?
What if she would never be able to see Mimi again the same way she hadn't set eyes on her father ever since he and her mother divorced?
What if Mimi had to grow up with Cora as her stepmother?
How would her life turn out?
Would Clyde's love be enough to protect her baby from Cora's evil?
The thoughts became so overwhelming that sadness engulfed her heart.
Violet couldn't help but hug her daughter gently. She couldn't help but think, what if things weren't this way?
What if Clyde deserves a second chance?
