Chapter 105 Pushing Her Away

At Twilight Hotel.

Time surely flies.

Funny how he was back in the same place, staring down at the same city's landscape.

Only now, with a different thought in his mind.

For the first time, Asher regretted following James' advice.

Then he wouldn't have been plunged into this dilemma.

He wouldn't hurt anyone.

The look on her face as he departed still clung to his mind.

She wasn't Violet.

Yet, he couldn't help but fantasize that it was her begging him not to leave.

If he ever knew that this act could hurt a lot of hearts, he wouldn't have started it.

“Mr. Sydney, you're spacing out again. You must be missing Ms. Hayes.” James entered the suite with his briefcase.

Glancing away from the window, Asher sighed.

How he wished missing Violet was the only thing occupying his mind.

“You don't have to worry.” James chuckled. “There's only one week left before it's all over. Ms. Hayes will soon return to you.”

And after one week, Asher would have to reveal everything to that strange girl.

How would she feel?

How was she going to react?

If only she could regain her memories before then, then things would be less awkward.

“Since you'd like to spend a few more days here, how about attending the business gala?” James suggested. “Meeting new people will help distract your mind. You're on the top invitation list. I think it's unreasonable to turn it down.”

Asher took the invitation from his assistant.

Attending the gala wasn't a bad idea.

But according to the invitation, he needed a plus one.

“Oh, and by the way, I've already hired a lady who will be your plus one,” James said as if reading his thoughts. “She's a professional and is used to such gatherings.”

Asher nodded.

The last thing he wanted was a strange girl begging to come back to the hotel with him.

He could only handle a professional.

“How's she?” He asked after putting the invitation away.

James needed not to ask whom he was referring to. “I spoke with the maid yesterday. She refused to take her medications.”

Maybe Asher shouldn't have asked.

Hearing his assistant's response dampened his mood.

If she refused to take her medications, how was she going to recover?

Did she miss him that much?

“She is very attached to you, Mr. Sydney,” James commented. “But I assure you that once she regains her memories, she'll forget this infatuation.”

That was the only thing Asher hoped for.

Then his guilt would be less.

He'd compensate her with whatever she wanted.

The evening approached and he got ready for the gala.

More than a thousand times, he'd resisted the urge to give Violet a call and let her know that he was in the city.

But backing out of his promise to her meant losing her trust. So he had to always let go of that idea.

As he stood in front of the mirror, buttoning up his tuxedo shirt, his gaze strayed to his phone sitting on the table stand.

Asher reached out to take it, but then, he paused.

If he gave her a phone call now, it would only raise her hopes.

And then, he would be more embarrassed when the truth finally came out.

Ever since he came on the business trip, he'd never called home once. But he couldn't give her false hope only to shatter it later.

His heart was heavy.

He couldn't bear this burden of guilt.

What if it turned out in the end that that girl had nothing against Violet?

Wouldn't he be hurting an innocent girl?

What if her family was out there searching for her?

As he got ready, all sorts of negative thoughts flooded his mind.

A knock came from the closet’s door, snapping him back to the present.

James came in, and from the wary look on his face, Asher had a feeling that something had gone wrong.

Did his plus one not show up?

However, James delivered worse news to him. “Mr. Sydney, she's here.”

She?

Who?

Frowning in confusion, Asher turned around.

He was about to ask, but she suddenly barged in, pushing past his assistant.

Violet!

His heart skipped a beat as she rushed into his arms.

“You're so ruthless, Honey. How could you leave me without a single phone call?” She sobbed. “Did I do anything wrong that you didn't tell me? Did I hurt your feelings?”

Asher’s heart dropped.

She wasn't Violet, judging from her voice.

How did she get to this city?

How did she find his location?

James quietly excused himself as he coaxed her. “What are you doing here, Violet?”

“Isn't it obvious? It's because I've missed you!” She stared at him, her eyes shining with tears.“I had a feeling you were never gonna return. I had to look for you.”

“Who told you I'm here?”

“Your Mum did.” She hugged him once more, sobbing against his chest. “Please don't repeat this, Honey. I felt so lonely, I almost died of heartbreak. You've been gone for so long, and I was so scared.”

Asher shut his eyes, the heavy weight on his heart getting bigger.

He hesitated before hugging her back, stroking her hair gently. “I'm so sorry.”

“Please, don't apologize…” She shook her head. “It must be annoying that I cling so much to you, but only because I love you.”

And he could see it in her eyes.

Could a person be brainwashed this way?

Asher’s guilt only ever increased, but he couldn't break her heart further.

He leaned down and kissed her forehead, forcing himself to smile. “You're not annoying, you're my wife. If you don't cling to me, who else will?”

The sadness in her eyes faded.

She smiled, playing with his sleeve’s cufflink. “Then can you stop pushing me away?”

“I'll no longer push you away,” He promised, despite knowing that he was going to break this promise sooner or later.

“Then, can I come along?” She stated. “James told me you're going somewhere important. I'd like to go with you.”
