Chapter 106 Make A Public Appearance
Asher pulled away, staring at her eager expression.
Why did James tell her that?
He couldn't bring her to the gala.
That would be dangerous.
“Please…” She cupped her palms together, giving him an adorable look.
Did he think she was adorable?
Hell, no!
He only had this silly idea only because she had Violet's face.
“I promise I'll be obedient. Please don't say no,” She went on pleading, tugging at his arm. “I came a long way to see you, Honey. I've missed you. Please take me with you.”
As she continued pleading, giving him that same innocent and pitiful look, how was he going to resist her request?
Asher would rather prefer she stayed here and wait for him.
In this strange city without her memories, she'd definitely be endangered.
Now he had more than one job to do tonight. He had to keep a close watch on her.
“You agree?” Her eyes lit up, reading his silent consent.
Asher nodded in confirmation and she all but threw her arms around him, hugging him tightly. “I always knew that you love me. Don't worry, Honey… I won't cause you any trouble.”
Asher sighed inside.
How ironic could fate get?
He'd been here, thinking he'd never give her any hope and deciding he would keep as much distance as possible.
However, fate just had to toss this huge challenge his way.
He looked at the dress she was wearing. It definitely wouldn't fit the theme of the business gala.
After taking her out of the closet, Asher summoned James who must have been standing just outside the hotel suite.
“I'm surprised as you are, Mr. Sydney. Please don't blame me for allowing Ms. Hayes, I mean, her in here,” James explained himself instantly.
The assistant must be thinking that Asher was about to punish him.
He wasn't a monster.
Of course, Asher would have scolded the assistant instead if he hadn't let her in. Anyway, she was already in this strange city so he had to accommodate her.
“Get her new clothes. We're attending the gala together.”
His instruction made the assistant's eyes widen in shock.
James stammered, “B- But, Mr. Sydney… what about the lady we hired.”
“Compensate her,” Asher replied, wondering why the assistant looked so paranoid.
It mustn't be only because of that lady, right?
“Remember the real Ms. Hayes is also in this city.” James cleared his throat and lowered his voice. “What if… what if they bump into each other.”
The chance of Violet bumping into her was very low.
Violet never attended public gatherings. It was as if she had a phobia of being around people.
For the many years that they'd been together, she never even attended a birthday party of one of their friends.
“Violet bumping into her isn't a problem…” Asher replied. “Let's make sure she doesn't fall into any danger, though.”
“Ah, I see.” James put on a relieved look. “She's very obedient, Mr. Sydney. I'm sure she'll be fine if you ask her to stick with you.”
That, Asher knew.
He glanced back inside the suite, his eyes falling on her sitting on the couch and staring out of the floor-to-ceiling window silently.
She was indeed obedient even when alone.
He shouldn't be bothered about her getting into any trouble.
James left and returned twenty minutes later with the dress.
A wine color.
Asher wouldn't have gone for that color as it would attract many eyes.
But it was too late to return it and time was running out.
While she got changed in the closet with the help of a stylist and a makeup artist whom James had brought along, Asher waited in the room.
He was so engrossed in checking out the stock market on his phone that he almost lost track of time.
“I'm ready.” Her voice pulled him back to the present.
Lifting his head, his heart skipped a beat as his eyes were met with the most mesmerizing sight.
Asher gulped and stood up, almost losing hold of his phone.
Unable to tear his gaze off her, he took in her appearance, the strange feeling inside his heart getting overwhelming. “You look so beautiful.”
The words tumbled out of their own.
He didn't know why he was suddenly comparing her to a goddess.
She blushed and looked down before hooking her arm around his. “My beauty is only for you to see.”
One moment, she was shy and docile, and the next moment, she was very romantic.
How complex, yet, cute.
Asher snapped out of it, freeing himself from the trance.
What silly thought was he having?
He almost slapped his forehead, letting the reality sink in.
“Shall we?” He left the hotel suite with her.
The venue wasn't so far from Twilight Hotel, but the ride there felt like an eternity.
Asher couldn't glance at her without thinking about Violet.
He couldn't help but imagine that it was Violet currently sitting beside him, dressed so gorgeously.
She shifted close until their legs touched.
Asher sucked in a deep breath and tugged at his necktie.
The atmosphere was suddenly suffocating and he didn't know why he was out of breath.
The car bumped as it almost got into a head-on collision, the impact tossing her forward and causing her to crash into him.
“Ouch!” She yelped.
Asher’s jaw tightened, feeling her soft palm pressed against his chest with her thigh pressed against his.
She was literally sitting in his lap.
“Hey, be careful!” He scolded the driver who glanced over through the rearview mirror.
“My apologies, Mr. Sydney. There's too much traffic.”
Asher's attention returned to the scared lady pressed against him.
His heart raced and he hoped she couldn't hear his heartbeat.
“Put on your seatbelt, Violet,” He instructed, and she climbed down, nodding obediently.
The rest of the car ride was awkward.
He couldn't afford to glance at her.
He couldn't bear it, sitting in the same proximity.
Damn! What had he gotten himself into?
Asher couldn't wait to arrive at the event. Once they were there, he'd completely forgotten his promise to keep her close.
Because right now, she was the danger he was desperately running from.
One moment, he was introducing her to his business partners, and the next moment, he was gone after making a quick excuse that he had to use the washroom.
Glancing around the crowd, she couldn't see his figure anywhere.
She obediently waited by the pastries stand, yet he never returned.
Bored, she was begging to lose interest in the event when someone approached her.
“Ah, am I seeing things? Who knew the untouchable Violet would finally make a public appearance?”
