Chapter 111 See To His Downfall

Violet shuddered from his grandfather's tone.

Because she sat very close to him, her ears caught each of his grandfather's words.

Turning around to see the man's expression, a strange tremor ran down her nerves.

But Clyde's expression was as pale as hers should have been by now. He looked speechless, his eyes widening.

“Uhm, Grandpa. I'll come-”

For the first time, she saw him stammer. And the old man didn't let him finish his words before shouting,

“Well, get down here and explain yourself! Because right now, this old man is having heart pains!”

Then his grandfather hung up.

Clyde sprang to his feet, almost making her fall in the process. And he looked disoriented as he hurried out of the study room.

“Where's Daddy going? Was it Greatgrandpa who called?” Mimi asked, hugging the new school bag to her chest. “I miss Greatgrandpa, Mummy. Can I go with Daddy?”

Violet shook her head. “No, Baby. I'm not sure where he's going. Ava will help you wash up. After you've rested, how about I accompany you to do your assignments?”

“No need, Mummy. Matt has already taught me how to solve the problems,” Mimi responded before leaving the study room.

For a few seconds, Violet didn't move from her spot.

Worry crept into her heart as his grandfather's words echoed inside her mind.

Killed his own sister?

How?

That was impossible, right?

Clyde might be heartless, but he'd never have the heart to kill anyone talk more of his kin.

There had to be a mistake somewhere.

Was someone trying to set him up?

Unable to let go of her curiosity while her worry only increased, Violet left the study room and hurried out of the building.

At the parking lot, she met Clyde about to enter his car.

“Wait! I'll go with you,” she said almost instinctively, pausing when he turned to glance at her.

Contrary to the shocked look on his face a while ago, the man now looked extremely angry as he made a phone call.

Violet almost didn't recognize him from his deadly expression.

She shuddered and took a step backward.

“It's just a meeting with Grandpa. Why do you want to go?”

His question had her contemplating.

Yeah. Why did she want to go?

Wasn't it because she was worried about him?

That strange accusation was deadly enough to tarnish his reputation.

Killing one’s own kin wasn't a mere offense.

“I- I just want to go,” Violet replied. And instead of waiting for him to ask any more questions, she jumped inside the car.

Clyde raced out of the Villa.

He drove the car at such a high speed that terrified her.

More than once, she'd asked him to slow down. But the man didn't seem to hear her.

He didn't seem to recognize her presence inside the car.

“You don't have to be angry if you're not guilty!” Violet shouted amidst the whooshing air as the car raced down the city.

He'd bypassed the traffic rules more than once. It was only a matter of time before the Cops came after them.

“Herman did this!” Clyde gritted out. “He must have something to do with it.”

Herman?

His uncle?

“Well, you already know the culprit. You can just expose him.”

Whether it was because of her suggestion or something else, Clyde suddenly chuckled.

“I wish that's easy.” He shook his head. “This matter isn't as simple as you think.”

The case about his sister's death?

What exactly happened?

Violet thought his sister took her own life or maybe fell into the hands of wicked people when she ran away.

The autopsy couldn't prove what killed her.

From the story he'd told her, the cause of his sister's death still remained a mystery.

How could he suddenly have a hand in it?

“As long as your conscience is clear, it's not impossible to clear your name.” She sighed. “Now can you stop driving too fast?”

He finally slowed down the car.

A few minutes later, Clyde's sighs also resounded in the car. “Why do you think I'm innocent? Why don't you also doubt me?”

Right.

Why was she supporting him when she hadn't known the full story yet?

Did she trust him that much?

Clyde had fed her birth control pills after all.

“I- I don't trust you,” She murmured. “I also don't think that you're a murderer.”

She glanced out of the window, struggling to pinpoint the strange feeling in her heart.

Violet had to convince herself that she only cared because his good reputation amounted to her baby's safety.

If rumors started that he killed his own sister, wouldn't that affect her daughter's reputation as well?

Now and then, she would glance at his side profile as he drove silently.

When they arrived at the mansion, Clyde didn't head to his grandfather's quarters directly.

Instead, he entered their quarters and went to his study room.

Violet followed him there.

Confused at what he was doing, she watched as he opened a safe and rummaged through it.

“Damn!” Clyde cursed under his breath and stood up.

Running a hand through his hair, he paced back and forth.

“What's wrong?” She asked.

Yet, he didn't answer her question.

Looking disoriented, he kicked the door to the safe and strode out.

Wondering what was inside that safe, Violet lingered in the study room.

The more she followed him, the more confused she got.

Clyde wouldn't say another word. In fact, he was already out of the building.

And she hurried after him again.

Despite running, Violet couldn't catch up with his large strides.

Clyde's figure faded in the distance as he disappeared in the direction that led to his grandfather's quarters.

She paused by the water fountain to catch her breath.

Holding her knees, Violet panted heavily.

“If I were you, I'd run for my life.” The strange voice made her look up.

Standing in the same proximity as the man made her uncomfortable, and Violet took a step backward.

“It's clear that your husband is a murderer. Why're you still chasing after him?” Herman closed the distance between them, disregarding the fact that she was trying to stay away from him.

“That is deep, coming from someone who has a hand in this mess,” She replied. “You'll gain nothing by tainting his name.”

“I'll get the chairman position.” He smirked. “The old man will have no other choice.”

Violet frowned.

“And you're free to come to me when he's no longer useful,” Herman added. “After all, he has been using you to get that position. It's time for a payback.”

That was ridiculous.

Glaring at the man, Violet pushed past him and hurried away.

Clyde was right.

Herman had something to do with it.

The fact that he didn't deny it made her worry.

To what length would he go to see to his downfall?
