Too Late, Ex-husband

Chapter 43 Nobody Leaves
Freya parted her lips, giving her a shocked look.
She was also speechless. The way Violet had been when Clyde stated that ridiculous offer.
For a few seconds, Freya didn't say any words.
Then her angry look returned. “That's too much to ask.”
Exactly.
Well, Clyde still insisted she was his wife.
She had a feeling that he wasn't joking when he said he didn't sign the divorce.
Following Clyde to IvoryHills would potentially mean an imprisonment for her.
What if he never allowed her to return?
“Well, you don't have to do what he said.” Freya gave her shoulder a reassuring pat. “Just let him go with Mimi and you'll stay behind.”
That was impossible.
Violet couldn't let her daughter embark on this journey alone.
She had a feeling that Clyde and his family would take Mimi away from her.
If Mimi was going, then she'd have to follow her.
But Violet couldn't go either. So this journey- she couldn't risk it.
“I know this is very complicated, Vi…” Freya softened her tone, giving her an apprehensive look. “I don't know your ex-husband well. All I know is that he's a heartless jerk. But you have to consider Mimi's feelings before she starts hating you. Just go. Why does the law exist, anyway? If that man or his family tries any nonsense, you can just sue him.”
Freya kept bringing that up.
But to sue someone like Clyde, one had to have a lot of guts.
Her mother's family was very powerful, but their influence was only limited to Sterling City.
While Clyde had obviously spread his influence across the continent. She should have thought twice before marrying someone this powerful.
“It isn't for your sake, but for your daughter's happiness and the relationship between you two…” Freya went on to convince her. “Think about it, Vi. No one can force you to break off your engagement with Asher.”
But a valid marriage between her and Clyde could do that.
Violet didn't want to face the reality that Clyde might be telling the truth.
If he was right, she couldn't just sit in one place or pretend it was nothing.
She had to make sure Clyde signed the divorce.
Violet contemplated her best friend’s words.
She couldn't disappoint her baby.
She couldn't do something she was uncomfortable with either. Most of all, she didn't want to break Asher's heart.
This heavy load resting on her shoulder was too hard to bear. Well, she couldn't act like a coward, could she?
Turning around, Violet walked back to the door.
Mimi's cries had long receded. The girl must have gotten tired of crying. After all, she'd been sobbing for hours.
“Mimi…” Violet knocked gently. The words felt heavy on her tongue, but she had to force them out. “You can open the door now, Dear. I'll take you to your Daddy.”
She waited for some seconds, anticipating to hear the girl's footsteps approaching.
There wasn't any sign of the girl opening the door soon, though.
“Mimi-”
“Mimi, it's alright.” Freya butted in. “This is not a trick to make you eat. I've already convinced your Mummy. We're all meeting your Daddy together.”
Even though Freya joined her in knocking at the door, Mimi didn't open it.
“Come on, Baby…” Violet sighed.
And gradually, apprehension rose in her chest, an almost suffocating feeling hitting her.
Did she enter the bathroom?
But she'd long taken a bath.
What if?
“Mimi!” Violet knocked louder. “Come on, open the door, Dear. You're scaring me!”
She didn't open it.
No sound came either.
The feeling of apprehension in Violet's chest expanded, and her heart beat faster than normal.
“I hope she's fine.” Freya looked worried as well, probably thinking the same thing.
But her baby wasn't.
Violet had a strong feeling about that.
Frantically, she grabbed the door's handle, pulling it with all her strength.
It didn't budge.
The door was too strong.
“Oh my goodness, Ma’am! Do you think something has happened to the little Miss?” The maid exclaimed.
“Violet, I- I don't like this feeling,” Freya stammered.
She also pushed and kicked the door, but its strength was no match for both of them.
Cursing under her breath, Freya gave the door a last kick before snapping to the maid. “Don't just stand there. Quick, get the bodyguards!”
The maid was gone in a split second.
As they waited for the bodyguards to come, Violet wriggled the door's handle until her fingers bled.
“Damn, stop it! You're hurting yourself, Vi!” Freya shouted at her.
But Violet couldn't let go.
Her whole body shook, and all kinds of negative feelings compounded her chest.
She couldn't hold back her tears either, the feeling that her baby's life was in danger getting stronger.
“Mimi! Can you hear me, Dear?” She called out constantly.
No response.
The bodyguards arrived and one of them kicked the door open.
The room was empty.
Violet's heart dropped, her eyes falling on the bed.
“Did she disappear or what!?” Freya flailed her hands in the air, equally shocked and confused.
But that wasn't the case.
The room was empty and quiet, however, Mimi sat against the wall in a corner.
She had her head buried in her knees, but she wasn't crying. She didn't move either.
Violet staggered as a sudden dizziness made her head spin.
Pulling herself together, she darted there and moved her baby from that spot.
Her body went limp against hers. She was unconscious.
“Oh my God!” Freya gasped. “Vi- Violet-”
“The little Miss has fainted!” The maid screamed. “M- Ma'am!”
Everyone inside the room was too shocked to react.
Did Mimi just faint?
Why couldn't Violet feel her breathing?
She had to listen very closely before she detected her shallow breaths.
Her baby wasn't breathing normally. Something was definitely wrong.
“Q- Quick, take her to the car- get it ready fast! What's the nearest hospital around here!?”
Freya gave out the instructions, yelling at the bodyguards who just stood there like statues.
Violet couldn't bring herself to say anything. Her vision blurred with tears, her gaze fixed on the unconscious girl.
Yet, the bodyguard’s reply was enough to make her lose her mind.
“We're sorry, but Mr. Sydney has instructed us that nobody leaves this Villa.”
