Chapter 53 Went Overseas

At The Crawford's Family Mansion.

The whole family was ready as well as the servants.

The extended family literally.

Clyde didn't expect the news to spread so fast. When he arrived home, he didn't look forward to seeing this crowd.

The vast dining table was filled to the brim with various delicacies, and the whole family sat on the chairs surrounding it.

His nephews, cousins, aunties, and uncles; literally, everyone was here.

He should have seen this coming when his grandfather sounded very happy on the phone.

This crowd was too much though.

What if Violet and Mimi weren't prepared for this?

Wouldn't they scare them off?

“Oh, I assure you, Becca, your granddaughter's gonna be a beauty just like you.”

His Aunt, Natalie, sat beside his mother, showering praises on her. “I'm just worried that she'll be too smart for her age.”

“Isn't that a good thing?” His mother chortled. “My granddaughter must have the best qualities.”

“Right!” Clyde’s father butted in. “In the next fifteen to twenty years, she'll be the most admired young lady in the socialites’ circle.”

“Oh, Dave… the future's still very far.” Rebecca sighed. “How about we just focus on the moment and make sure our granddaughter is perfect?”

“But I heard your daughter-in-law’s background is quite poor, Becca.” Another one of his Aunts, Olivia, added. “Are you sure that she didn't rub it on your granddaughter?”

“Every heir of the Crawford's household is outstanding no matter what condition they live in. By the way, it has been long since my daughter-in-law mingled with poor people,” Rebecca scoffed. “How about you keep your opinions to yourself, Olivia?”

“Well, your daughter-in-law is quite something, disappearing for many years.”

“I've told you she was just busy overseas. Now mind your business!”

Although his mother and Aunties were from the same parents, they rarely got along, especially with Olivia who never missed an opportunity to display her jealousy.

Seriously, this crowd wasn't needed.

Clyde would have preferred a quiet dinner with only his grandfather and parents present.

That was what he expected, and not this.

He glanced at his wristwatch, drumming his finger slowly against the table.

He couldn't believe he was this impatient.

He'd told Cora to take her time, getting Violet and Mimi prepared, but now he couldn't wait to see them.

So his divorce wouldn't turn into a scandal, his family had lied that Violet had traveled overseas to pursue her career.

Nobody else apart from the family's Butler knew that Violet had run off after leaving behind the divorce papers.

So they had to make Violet's return look like she just came back from abroad.

Bringing out his phone, Clyde stood up and walked to a quiet corner.

He dialed Cora's number, and she picked up almost immediately. “Aren't they ready yet? What are you still doing?”

Well, Cora didn't sound good.

Her heavy sighs resounded, before she lamented, “Violet gave me a hard time, Clyde. I tried my best, but she wouldn't cooperate.”

Violet wasn't coming?

Clyde should have sensed that coming.

“Where are you?”

“I'm on the way to the mansion too,” Cora murmured. “Just know that I did all I could, Honey. But Violet brainwashed your daughter. I don't know what she's up to, I tried to stop her, and…”

She paused, sobbing silently from the other end. “I hope nothing goes wrong. I'm afraid, Honey.”

Clyde didn't understand her words.

What exactly did she mean?

Was Violet coming or not?

“Cora-”

The call disconnected as he was about to speak.

Clyde cursed out loud, tugging at his necktie.

An uneasy feeling settled on his chest and he walked back and forth.

“What's up, Buddy?” Someone slapped him on the shoulder.

Only Harry had the guts to do that.

“You look tense; what's the problem?” Harry chuckled. “Too excited to meet your beloved family again?”

Clyde wiped his face.

He was more wary than excited.

After listening to Cora's words and her tone, his mind wasn't at ease.

What was Violet up to?

Was she even going to show up?

“Bro, chillax.” Harry shook his head. “If anyone sees you like this, they'll have the idea that you can't do without your wife.”

“What's wrong with that?” Clyde shrugged him off.

“Ah, everything's wrong. You see, women are complicated. Shower them with too much love, and you'll end up with heartbreak. But sprinkle them with a little bit of love and they'll keep chasing you, begging for more.”

“It's no wonder you're not married yet.”

Clyde didn't have time to waste on the guy, so he walked off.

And as he walked away, Harris' laughter resounded. “I'm better off being single. At least, I can have as many women as I want!”

Clyde returned to the vast table.

The family seemed to be engaged in a heated argument as his mother's face was now devoid of a smile.

“Olivia, I told you to just leave.”

“Calm down, Becca, I'm sure she doesn't mean it.” Natalie interceded for the woman who didn't seem a bit apologetic.

“What did I say wrong?” Olivia sighed. “Becca, I was only worried that she gave birth to a granddaughter instead of a grandson. Doesn't that spell bad luck?”

“There's no bad luck in this family. Well, I guess you're so stricken with poverty that you've become too pessimistic. Is it my fault that you didn't listen to our parents and went and married that poor mechanic!?” Rebecca shot back.

“Well, a poor mechanic is better than a man whom you can only bear one child with!” Olivia shot to her feet. “I'm not jealous of you, Becca! I'm just looking out for you.”

“Yes, you are!”

“Be quiet, Ladies!” The old man sitting at the table looked fed off. “We are here for a celebration, and not to fight over petty and insignificant matters. Compose yourselves!!!”

The ladies went quiet, and peace returned to the table.

Clyde kept glancing at his wristwatch.

They were thirty minutes late. What the hell was keeping them?

“Ah, who are these people?” Someone exclaimed.

And then more gasps spread across the table, prompting Clyde to glance up.

His jaw dropped and his phone almost slid off his hands.

What the hell were they wearing!?
