Chapter 56 Prove His Loyalty
Violet stiffened up, holding her breath.
She dared not to turn back, due to their proximity.
His question was out of the blue.
Was it even necessary?
“State a single reason why I should,” She murmured, staring at his reflection through the standing mirror.
For a man who had cheated right in front of her, should there be any other reasons why she should give him her trust?
She wasn't a fool.
Violet wasn't a kid either.
Five years ago, she knew what she saw, and she knew that he already knew she'd discovered.
“My relationship with Cora isn't as you think.” Staring at her reflection too, he snaked his arm around her waist, holding her close to him.
Violet struggled between ignoring his touch and focusing on his words.
Who would even believe that?
“Violet…” Clyde went on. “I still want us to be a couple… I mean it-”
“I no longer want to be with you,” she whispered. “Is that too hard to digest?”
And what the hell was he doing?
Clyde leaned forward, holding her waist with his other hand as he trailed kisses down her nape.
Her breathing hitched.
She had to clench her fists to get a hold of herself.
She had to close her eyes to not give herself out. “Clyde, stop it.”
“Just give me another chance…” His tone was unusually soft. “I need you by my side, Violet.”
If only she could be deaf for a few minutes.
Violet wished she never heard those words.
The words coming from him sounded more like a mockery to her.
How could she ever forget his betrayal?
He never had feelings for her. Why was he acting now as If he did?
“Please, Violet…” He continued begging, his movements getting bolder. “Let's give our baby a complete family.”
Violet swallowed, fighting down her emotions.
Was he doing this all because of Mimi?
Did he finally want to settle down? Funny how he never wanted a child with her in the first place.
But the appearance of a child might change things in many ways, right?
“Without us both by her side, Mimi can still survive,” Violet replied.
She was a living proof.
Hadn't she grown up without her father's care?
Did she die midway or lose her mind?
Her case was the worst because her father never wanted to see her.
Mimi at least had a father who could check on her always.
“Violet-”
“Clyde, that's enough.” Violet yelped, pushing his hands off her body. “I won't go back on my words. It's never gonna be possible between us.”
They faced each other, her heart racing from the aftereffects of his touch, while his eyes flashed with longing and regret.
“One month,” Clyde stated, reaching for something inside his suit jacket. “Just give me one month to prove my loyalty. After that, you can choose whether to stay or leave.”
One month was very far away.
Violet couldn't even survive a day with him.
He brought a folder out and retrieved a document from it.
The divorce papers stared right at her. The same papers she'd left behind five years ago.
“I haven't signed it yet,” He added. “With this proof alone, I can have this ring forcefully removed from your finger.”
When he stared at the ring, his expression darkened for a second.
“Choose wisely, Violet…” He stroked her hair, tucking a stray strand aside. “I only request one month from you. After that, the decision lies in your hands.”
As the man turned and left, Violet touched her chest, her heart sinking inside.
Clyde hadn't been bluffing when he mentioned not signing the divorce papers.
How bad could her luck get?
Had she been living these past few years with the Mrs. Crawford title still in her name?
Had she gotten engaged with another man still with that title?
She sat on a stool, holding her forehead.
So many thoughts bombarded her mind and Violet fought to focus on one.
How was she gonna accept his proposal?
What was she gonna tell Asher?
Even if she turned him down, Clyde would still forcefully make her fulfill his wish, and all he needed for that to happen was taking the divorce papers to the court.
Either way, whether she agreed or not, Clyde could get what he wanted.
“If I were you, I'd run as far as I could.” A light voice full of mockery sounded in the closet.
The most irritating voice.
Violet believed she was the only person inside the room.
Did Cora get in here after Clyde left?
“I heard everything…” She went on, folding her hands and smiling sweetly. “I must say Clyde is quite an actor.”
Cora sauntered forward and stood in front of her, shaking her head. “How could he say there's nothing between us when he touches me here and here?”
“Girl to girl.” Dropping a palm on her shoulder, she whispered in her ear. “Let go of that man. Leave this city, Dear. Can't you see that Clyde and I only belong together?”
Violet snickered.
So Cora had been inside the room and she'd been eavesdropping on them.
“Unfortunately…” She pushed her away, rising to her feet. “I don't take orders from someone who throws herself at a man.”
“You!” Cora's eyes changed immediately before she retained her smile. “Fine. Don't say I didn't warn you. You'll be surprised at what I can do to get my man.”
“I just hope that man wants to be gotten…” Violet replied, stepping forward until she closed the distance between them.
She placed a palm on Cora's shoulder and leaned forward, whispering in her ear. “Girl to girl. Stop chasing a man if he chases after another woman. It only makes you look ridiculous.”
Cora glared at her.
The words must have hit her so much that she couldn't keep up her calm facàde.
“Violet Harris, we shall see who's gonna look ridiculous in the end!” She screamed, raising a hand to slap her.
