Chapter 57 Their Promise
~
Clyde hadn't left the building yet when a piercing scream tore through the silent atmosphere.
He came to a halt in the hallway, frowning.
That voice.
Was that scream from the room he just came out from or was it just his imagination?
The realization that Violet might be in trouble had him turning on his heels and hurrying back.
The closer he got to that room, the louder the screams became.
“Violet!” He called out but nobody answered.
His heart beating with devastation, Clyde headed straight to the closet- and a perfume bottle came flying in his direction, missing his face by only a few inches.
“Honey, you're here. Please help! Save me from this crazy woman!” Cora sat on the floor in a corner, trembling and holding her bloodied forehead.
The person who had thrown the perfume bottle was none other than Violet.
What was going on?
Five minutes had not passed since he left this place, yet a lot had already happened. “Violet, what's going on?”
Violet rolled her eyes, picking up another bottle of perfume leisurely. “How about you ask your mistress what happened?”
“Honey, she's crazy! She has lost it!” Cora sobbed. “I only came to check on her and she attacked me!”
Really?
When did she get here?
Glancing from one lady to the other, Clyde still couldn't grasp what was happening.
Cora had lost a lot of blood, her face was almost unrecognizable.
While Violet looked alright, completely untouched.
He couldn't believe she was the same docile woman he'd threatened inside here some minutes ago.
Where did this fierce attitude come from?
Had something changed about her, or was it only his imagination?
“Did Cora offend you-”
“No, I just love bullying young defenseless girls who chase after men,” she answered sarcastically.
Clyde sighed inside.
Violet must be holding a grudge against Cora for what happened.
Well, he had no right to blame her, did he?
“Get up.” He helped Cora to her feet, but she clung to him so tightly, staining his shirt with her blood.
Clyde frowned in displeasure, scrunching up his nose at the metallic stench.
“Honey, I'm so scared. Please tell her it's not what she thinks.” Cora’s body shook, her sobs getting louder. “Violet wants to end my life.”
“She won't,” Clyde assured her and took her out of the place.
He couldn't help but give Violet a last glance.
Her eyes flashed with a coldness that shocked him, and her lips curled into a menacing smile.
What the hell had she turned into?
Was she the same woman he knew?
Could it be her doppelganger?
“Honey- Honey, please don't let her come near me…” Cora went on sobbing as he took her down the hallway. “I'm afraid-”
“It's okay,” Clyde muttered. “Violet is not that evil.”
Cora gave him an astonished look as more tears streamed down her face. “She- She did this to me!”
“You shouldn't have gone close to her,” he replied, his tone impassive and calm.
Cora couldn't swallow the bitter truth staring right at her.
She couldn't believe Clyde was defending that crazy woman.
Violet almost killed her inside that closet for goodness sake!
She didn't see that coming.
The girl had always been docile and coy, not minding her harsh words in the past.
Violet's change didn't only affect her manners. She'd also gotten stronger.
Thinking she could beat her up, funny how she ended up getting beaten up instead.
“H- Honey…” She sobbed for real this time after hearing his last statement.
Wasn't he supposed to blame Violet?
She was the one with the bloodied forehead and not that crazy woman. “I- I don't have a good feeling about Violet's return, Honey.”
“Stop calling me that.”
“Huh?”
Clyde stared at her, his eyes stern, and his expression blank. “Don't address me that way anymore.”
Cora shook her head in disbelief.
For a minute, she couldn't form a coherent word.
The throbbing ache in her forehead couldn't let her think straight. “A- Are you ending our promise?”
His silence bothered her the most.
He stared ahead, taking his eyes off her.
Cora couldn't stop shaking her head.
She couldn't believe what was about to happen.
So when he begged that bitch to come back to him in the closet, he meant his words.
But having Violet back didn't mean he no longer had a place for her in his heart, right?
“Please don't do this to me, Clyde…” She hugged him. “You know how much I love you-”
“I have a family now.” He stopped walking when they got outside. “End your silly game.”
Her silly game?
Cora yelped as he dropped her outside the door.
“I'm sure you can walk. Take yourself to the hospital.” Those were the last cruel words he said before going back inside.
Was he returning to that bitch?
What was he gonna do… apologize?
Cora stayed on the floor, holding her forehead and laughing as if she'd lost her mind.
So this was it.
He'd already made his choice.
Clyde didn't know one thing, though. She never gave up on her pursuits.
Did he think Violet was the right woman for him?
Wasn't he leading himself to destruction?
She brought out a hankie and carefully wiped the blood with it.
The sound of tiny footsteps rushing in her direction broke the silence around her.
The little girl paused in front of her and gasped. “Aunt Cora, did you fall? Is that blood on your forehead?”
“Oh, no- it is not, Dear.” She smiled, staring at the girl's face, wondering how great it was gonna feel to wipe off that innocence.
“I'm so happy it's not blood.” The girl giggled. “Have you seen my Mummy and Daddy, Aunt Cora?”
“Oh, yes- I have.” Cora nodded. “They're in the backyard over there.” She pointed straight ahead.
The girl's eyes strayed to where she was pointing. Then she squinted her eyes. “That place looks creepy. Well, thanks for your help, Aunt Cora.”
“I bet your Mummy will thank me too, Dear.” Cora clicked her tongue, her eyes glinting as she watched the girl run off.
