Chapter 61 Melt For Him

The place sank into a deep deafening silence after Becca's last statement.

There were shocked looks in the eyes of the spectators, especially Freya, who covered her mouth and gasped.

Violet endured the burning pain, rubbing her cheek slightly.

She should have seen this coming. She was just too slow to react.

Becca loved bullying her and her favorite punishment was slapping her. She should have known that the woman would never change.

“Just wait and see!” The woman went on. “Once Cora brings her back, I'm seizing her from your custody and entrusting her to a competent nanny.”

Violet would have entrusted Mimi to a nanny if she wanted to.

Well, she'd even forsaken her job in order to give all her time to her baby.

For Mimi's sake, she'd turned down every job offer.

How could the woman say that she wasn't capable enough?

“You said it yourself, Becca.” Violet dropped her hand, her fingers trembling and she balled them into fists. “Mimi's your granddaughter while she's my daughter. Understand the difference.”

The people gasped this time, looking more confused.

Becca's expression shifted between rage and shock. “A- Are you talking back, Violet?”

“What's going on?”

“The Young Miss would never do that.”

“She has endured Mrs. Crawford's beatings in the past. Maybe her tongue slipped.”

The servants murmured behind them, prompting Violet to recall the past.

Shaking her head with a smile, her past self disgusted her, really.

How could she have let this woman bully her again and again?

Was it because she'd been blinded by Clyde’s love?

“Oh, now that you have a child, you think you can turn against your own mother-in-law!” Becca berated. “You filthy girl! You should thank me for letting my son bring you back!”

Violet had no time to squabble with the woman.

She couldn't help but laugh at the woman's last statement though. “I'd also appreciate it if you ask him to send me back. I hope he listens to you.”

“You!” The woman pointed a shaky finger at her, her eyes turning red.

Violet could feel Clyde's gaze on her.

Strange how the man didn't react even when his mother hit her.

Well, he never reacted.

When it came to his parents, the heartless man was suddenly the peacemaker.

“Violet, that's enough.” He drew her back into his arms, pulling her away from his mother. “She doesn't mean it, Mum… Besides, I was the one who took her away.”

Right!

If Clyde hadn't pulled her away, why would Violet have left her baby alone with his parents?

It was totally the man's fault, yet-

“It's still her fault!” His mother was hearing none of it. “Don't blame yourself, Son, when you have the most careless girl for a wife!”

Violet chuckled.

Clyde rubbed her back gently, probably pacifying her or trying to stop her from talking back.

She wasn't planning to waste her time. All she wanted right now was to see her baby. “Take me to the hospital.”

Clyde nodded. “The car is ready.”

Someone must have gone to get the drivers because two cars pulled over in front of them at that moment.

Grandpa Luke couldn't go. The old man appeared weak already from all the drama. “I don't blame you, Violet. But be more careful next time, okay?”

“Yes, Grandpa.” Violet sighed.

Even though the old man loved her, nobody could do anything against Becca's wrath.

As the mistress of the household, she called all the shots and even the men had to listen to her.

If Clyde had followed his mother's wish, they probably wouldn't even get married in the first place.

Violet followed him into the car while his parents took the second car.

She still couldn't get it.

Hadn't Cora been wounded?

How was she the person who found and saved Mimi?

“Does it hurt?” Clyde sat beside her in the backseat of the car. He reached over to touch her cheek, his tender gaze filled with concern. “Sorry about that. Don't mind Mum, okay?”

Violet stared at him.

Clyde had always been by her side whenever his mother bullied her.

He rarely stood up for her but was always ready to offer her a shoulder to cry on.

Only now that she'd realized his actions had been fake.

Violet wasn't a fool anymore.

Ignoring his question, she faced the other side.

“Damn! Is that how your mother-in-law treats you, Vi!?” Freya sat on the passenger seat beside the driver. “You had a cruel mother-in-law and a cruel husband. How difficult life must have been-”

“I'm not cruel to her.” Clyde cut her off, his eyes flashing with annoyance. “Don't jump to conclusions.”

“Says the one who can't stand up for his wife!” Freya gave him a dry laugh. “So much for being a gentleman, Mr. Crawford.”

“Freya, it's okay…” Violet stopped her.

She didn't know Clyde well.

The heartless man must only be tolerating her because she was present.

But who knew what Clyde might do to her best friend behind her back if she pushed him too far?

“Urgh! This is unbelievable!” Freya scoffed and faced the road.

She had no idea Violet was protecting her.

Now she was mad at her.

Sighing helplessly, Violet fiddled with the hem of her dress.

Clyde's parents had mentioned that her baby was safe.

Why was her mind still not at ease, though?

Was it because she was with Freya?

Shifting close to her, Clyde rubbed her arm gently, an assuring gesture to calm her down.

Violet wished he didn't do that.

It was useless anyway. Nothing he did would ever make her melt for him again.

She was never going to commit the same mistakes.

When they arrived at the hospital, they all rushed to the ward where her baby had been admitted.

Violet was the first to barge inside.

And she couldn't believe her eyes.

“Aunt Cora, you look more beautiful now. Now you won't have to worry about others laughing at your scar.”

Mimi stood on a chair facing Cora who sat on the bed with a bandage on her forehead.

The little girl was applying make-up on her.
