Chapter 73 The Happiest Woman
She stared at him, her arms wrapped around his neck.
Waiting for her to push him away or put up a fight, imagine his surprise when she slowly nodded.
Clyde sighed in relief.
He stepped inside the bathroom with her, a crazy idea cooking up.
What if he got her drunk every day so she could always be this obedient?
Well, that would be silly.
Clyde turned up the water in the bathtub, making sure it was the right temperature.
He dropped her favorite fragrant shower soap in it, letting it stir until bubbles formed.
And then he carefully dropped her in the tub.
Violet shivered before adjusting to the temperature.
Closing her eyes, she let out a soft moan. Clyde was about to head to the shower, but she pulled him back. “Won't you give me a bath anymore?”
No!
He changed his mind just a second after hearing her moan.
Clyde had underestimated himself. He'd thought he could observe self-control,
Well, he'd rather save his life before she ended it in the morning.
“Wash up.” He gave her the soap. “I'll be there, watching.”
But watching was another torture. Not as tormenting as having to touch her though.
Yet, Violet didn't let him go.
She pulled him inside the bathtub, splashing water all over the place.
“When you make a promise, Hubby, you're supposed to make it happen.” She swam towards him, whispering in his ear. “Otherwise, you'll just be a disappointment.”
Clyde would rather be a disappointment than have her hate him in the morning.
He couldn't believe he was running from what his body desperately longed for at the moment.
But this was only a momentary pleasure while her hate for him could last for eternity.
Holding her shoulders, Clyde exercised the ultimate self-control.
He took the soap from her hand and gently rubbed it all over her body.
It was the most torturing moment in his whole existence.
After giving her a bath, he washed himself quickly and then wrapped her in a towel.
“Mmm. You're so kind to me.” She snuggled in his arms. “Hubby, you're the best!”
That compliment alone made the torture all worth it.
Clyde wore his bathrobe and stepped out of the bathroom with her.
He changed the bedsheets before placing her on the bed.
About to head to the closet to bring out something to wear, Violet held him back.
She gasped, staring at him through half-closed eyes. “Keep me company, okay?”
“I'll be right back-”
“No.” She tugged at his bathrobe. “I'm so scared, Hubby. Please stay with me.”
Clyde gave in and rested beside her.
How he loved hearing her call him that.
“Hubby.” She snuggled close to him, repeating the same words. “ I'm so scared… Please don't leave me.”
“I'll be here all night.” Clyde wrapped one arm over her, stroking her back.
She breathed steadily, her hot breath fanning his chest.
“I'm so scared…” Violet repeated, sniffling softly. “Do you think that heartless man will come for me? Do you think he'll take my baby away?”
Who was she referring to?
Clyde frowned.
He leaned down and kissed her hair. “Nobody will harm you as long as I'm here.”
“But he's so powerful.” She sobbed. “He broke my heart, Hubby. He cheated with another girl and said I'm a gold-digger! He's so mean…”
Oh… she was talking about him.
Clyde’s heart tightened and something stuffed his throat.
The sudden heavy feeling in his chest was unbearable.
Did he really call her a gold-digger?
“Please don't let him take me away, Hubby. You've promised to protect me forever, Ash. I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have run from our first engagement.”
Her words put a stop to the train of his thoughts.
Clyde halted his movements as well, his fingers stroking her back becoming numb.
Ash.
Was she referring to Asher?
Did she assume him to be that man?
“You're so kind to me.” She looked up from his chest, stretching forward until their lips almost touched. “Don't allow that heartless man to take me away. He'll only break my heart again, but you won't do that, right, Ash?”
Clyde avoided her kiss.
The more she spoke, the more his heart tightened.
What an irony that she was in his arms, yet her heart was with another man.
Had he hurt her so much?
Just how broken did she become that she'd beg another man to save her from him?
“Please don't avoid me.” She made him face her, her eyes watering up with tears. “I'm gonna be a good girl, just promise you won't break my heart.”
When she kissed him, it was the most bitter feeling.
Yet, her sobs were more heart-wrenching.
What had he done?
Did she love him so much?
Five years was long enough for her to forget everything. Still, it appeared she hadn't gotten over the heartbreak.
She must have loved him wholeheartedly.
Her indifference was only a facàde.
Clyde couldn't believe that he'd messed up big time.
If only he could turn back time. If only it was easy to erase memories, then he would make her forget everything she witnessed five years ago.
“Ash, can you promise me one more thing?” Her soft voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
She was dozing off gradually.
“Promise me you'll treat my baby as if she's yours. Don't let her cry for her Daddy again.”
Clenching his jaws, Clyde struggled to keep his emotions at bay.
She didn't plan to leave him but also take his daughter from him.
Wasn't she heartless?
It was his fault, wasn't it?
Did he not deserve a second chance?
“Violet.”
“Mm?”
He called out her name and she fluttered her eyelids, her wide eyes filled with innocence.
Clyde sighed.
He stroked her hair instead, lulling her to sleep.
“Don't worry… I'll treat you better this time. You'll be the happiest woman.”
“Really?” Her eyes lit up.
As if letting go of the idea of sleeping, her expression brightened and she climbed over him, attacking him with a deep kiss.
