Chapter 92 Her Greatest Weakness
Violet followed him inside, her footsteps slow, somehow hesitating.
They walked past the living room, heading upstairs.
Then something caught her eyes and she stopped in her tracks.
Inside the huge frame hanging on the wall was a photo of an ocean with the figure of a lady sitting on the seashore, her back facing the camera.
That photo was taken during their honeymoon on an Island, and he'd had the photo laminated and used as a wall decor.
Violet glanced away, her heart thumping inside her chest.
She resumed walking upstairs, doing her best to avoid the familiar sights.
The flower vases.
The decorations.
The furniture.
Each artifact brought back memories of the blissful love they once shared.
Why didn't he throw them away?
Why didn't he burn them?
The fact that he'd preserved everything inside the Villa troubled her mind.
She couldn't live in these memories.
She was only going to spend a few more weeks, but coming across them every day… she wasn't sure if her sanity would still be the same in the end.
Violet couldn't wait to get to the room upstairs.
She hastened her footsteps, hurrying past the man.
On entering the bedroom, she shut the door and entered the bathroom.
Everything was in pairs.
The slippers, towels, sponges, toothbrushes, and everything else inside the bathroom.
No. She wasn't gonna share the same room with him.
Violet washed her face in the sink and stared at her reflection through the mirror.
Damn. She looked exhausted.
After the recent illness, she'd lost some weight too.
She decided to take a shower to release most of her pent-up frustration.
Feeling more refreshed and energetic, she changed into a simple baggy blouse paired with shorts.
Here, Violet could wear whatever she wanted.
Even while they were still together, the Villa was where she could live like a free bird.
Back in the mansion, she had to dress properly and outdo herself in order to please his parents.
Clyde had always been by her side, offering her comfort and support.
He'd made her believe that their love surpassed everything else… until that single afternoon.
She would never forget those words he said in his office.
“What are you thinking about?”
His presence startled her.
Standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, overlooking the city's landscape, Violet didn't realize that he'd been standing behind her.
Before she could react, his strong arms suddenly hugged her from behind.
Violet swallowed, breathing in deeply to control her heartbeat. “Let go.”
He didn't heed her command.
Clyde only hugged her tighter.
“Let's discuss, Violet…” He murmured against her ear.
But she held his arm, struggling to loosen it from around her waist. “There's nothing to discuss.”
“Yes, there is.” Clyde sighed.
He was still stubborn not to let go of her.
Exhausted, Violet gave up struggling.
Whatever he wanted to say, she seriously didn't want to hear it.
There shouldn't be any excuses for making her take birth control pills.
“That afternoon, you saw wrong, Violet…”
He didn't speak about the pills.
He touched a topic that Violet wished he never brought up.
The memory of that afternoon had always played in her mind, yet, having someone mention it was what triggered her the most.
She saw wrong.
Ha!
Maybe she'd been blind. Maybe she'd been brainwashed.
“I mean, that wasn't me, Violet… I would never say those things.”
But he did.
Violet didn't know what to believe.
She didn't want to keep listening to his lies.
“Please listen to me-”
“Why are you wasting your energy?” She scoffed. “Are you trying to apologize, Mr. Crawford? Is that necessary?”
His apology was useless.
She was going to leave after all.
Why didn't he save his pride instead?
“Well, I'm sorry.” He squeezed her gently in his arms, sighing heavily. “Those words were said by me, but I wouldn't have said them if I wasn't under the effects of hallucinations. I underestimated Cora.”
But his words bore so much hatred towards her.
It made her feel like a fool.
It made her question her existence.
If he hadn't hated her, would he have said those words?
Would he have called her a gold-digger?
“Violet, the past isn't the present. I've missed you while you were gone. I was mad at first, but now I don't think I can let you or Mimi go.”
Violet shut her eyes.
He didn't mean it.
Clyde was good at sweet words. He never meant the things he said.
“Believe me this time…” He went on. “Let bygones be bygones, My Love. Let's start a new life.”
A life with him was never possible.
He didn't want her when she wanted him.
Was she supposed to want him now that he wanted her?
“Too late, Clyde…” She smiled bitterly. “My heart is now with another man.”
Tension hung in the air the moment she finished speaking.
His demeanor changed and he stiffened up, his arms loosening around her.
Violet freed herself.
She didn't stare at him, probably to avoid seeing his expression.
What was with this sudden gloom?
What was with this unbearable sadness that clawed at her heart?
She'd only felt this way once… five years ago. Was coming back to this Villa filled with so many memories of them a good idea?
She made to walk past him, but he grabbed her arm.
His movement wasn't gentle as he pulled her back against him.
In the next moment, Clyde’s lips invaded hers. He kissed her hard at first, and then gently, his tongue diving inside her mouth, inciting a moan from her.
Violet's senses left her. Throwing her arms over his shoulders, she wrapped them around his neck, deepening their kiss.
She wanted to stop.
She tried to break away.
But the more she hated what she was doing, the stronger her desire for him to continue.
It seemed even after many years, Clyde still had the same effect on her.
Her greatest weakness.
Was she a goner?
