Chapter 94 Break Her Heart

At Metro City.

No!

He couldn't do it.

As much as they resembled, she wasn't Violet.

She would never be.

“Mr. Sydney, breaking the young lady's heart will have consequences. You've already made her believe that she's your wife.”

Asher didn't know how a video conference with his assistant turned into a relationship coaching session.

But he'd been distracted throughout the meeting.

He wasn't focusing, and James was fast to realize that something was bothering him.

“Doing that is like cheating on Violet…” Asher wiped his face. “Besides, I can't.”

Violet was the only woman he'd ever been in love with.

The only woman he'd ever fantasized about.

His desire, when it came to the other women, was zero.

He couldn't bring himself to touch her, talk more of kissing her.

James' heavy sigh echoed through the speakers. “I should have known you're too loyal to Ms. Hayes. We should have clarified things to that young lady in the hospital.”

But that was the only way to be close to her and keep a close watch on her.

His assistant’s advice wasn't a foolish one.

If Asher truly wanted to know what was going on, he had to keep a close eye on her.

His only mission was to find out about her connection with Violet. To do that, he must keep her close until she regained her memories.

“I don't even know why I'm so worried.” He sighed.

Probably because he was afraid of breaking many hearts.

He could break her heart.

He could break Violet's heart too, and his heart would also be broken in return.

“Since you cannot do what she wants, just come up with excuses…” James suggested. “You only have to put up with her until she regains her memories.”

Excuses.

Whenever he came up with excuses, she appeared hurt.

However, she would hurt more once it was all over.

He just couldn't bear to see her looking sad all because of his selfish plan.

Nodding to his assistant, Asher closed the laptop’s lid, ending the meeting.

Relaxing back on his swivel chair, he let out a frustrated sigh.

“You're working late.” She came in moments later, holding a tray containing a glass of warm milk. “I heard this will help you fall asleep faster. Working late is not good for your health.”

Asher watched as she carefully dropped the tray in front of him.

Her fingers trembled a bit.

She'd scalded them during the kitchen incident, and he'd only noticed a bit late. “You should be sleeping by now.”

“Sleeping alone scares me…” Instead of sitting on the chair across from him, she sat on his chair’s armrest. “I had nightmares about the accident, Honey… they were so scary.”

Nightmares.

Were her memories returning?

“Do you remember anything before the accident?”

She shook her head to his question. “I- I can't. I only have headaches when I try to recall.”

Her tone became gloomy and she looked down, fiddling with her fingers. “I- I don't want to continue sleeping in the guest room. Sleeping on the same bed won't hurt. My arms have healed, Honey… Even if you lay on them accidentally, I won't feel pain.”

That was his excuse for not sharing the same room with her.

Asher sighed inside.

He'd really got himself into trouble.

“Besides, I feel like if we share the same bed, I won't have those nightmares anymore…” She went on. “Can I sleep in your room tonight?”

Asher wished he didn't look up.

Her wide eyes watered up, and she gave him a pleading look.

How could he come up with more excuses when she was staring at him like this?

When she was this pitiful, how could he turn her down?

“Please…” She held his hands. “I'm not gonna disturb you while you sleep. I promise.”

Sighing inside, Asher stood up.

“Aren't you gonna drink your milk?” She picked up the glass and followed him.

But then, she winced and the glass slipped out of her hands. The milk spilled and the glass shattered.

“Oh, I'm so sorry!” She covered her lips and sobbed. “I- I didn't know.”

“Hey, it's not your fault…” Asher returned and moved her away from the broken pieces.

Of course, the warmth from the glass cup would only hurt her scalded fingers. She'd let go of the glass instinctively out of pain.

“I've told you to stop doing these things.” He carefully blew on her fingers. “The maid will take care of them.”

“I just want to make you happy.” She stared at him. “I- I can't help it.”

Asher stroked her hair.

Wouldn't she hate him when she regained her memories and realized that he was only using her?

“Please let me sleep with you tonight…” She hugged him, burying her face in his chest. “Pretty please. I don't snore, and I won't disturb you. I'm no longer sick, Hubby.”

Asher sighed.

Could he turn her down?

It was only sharing the same bed, right?

It wasn't like they were going to do anything.

“Whatever you say.” He agreed.

She smiled and kissed him on the cheek before leaving.

Asher touched that spot, his heart stopping for a second.

Guilt settled in, and he cursed under his breath.

Honestly, he couldn't do this.

As he packed the broken glasses away and cleaned the place, he contemplated his decision over and over again.

When Asher arrived at the master's bedroom, she was already in bed, waiting for him.

She wasn't sleeping yet as she stared at a photo frame on the bedside table. “Do you always keep this here?”

Asher nodded, occupying his side of the bed, maintaining a considerable distance from her.

“I look so beautiful in this photo.” She giggled. “It's no wonder you keep it close.”

Actually, it was a photo of Violet.

It was taken during their high school days.

“Your Mum told me that I'm the only girl you've ever loved…” She turned on her side, facing him with a warm smile. “I wonder what good deed I've done to deserve such a kind and loving husband.”

Asher sighed inside.

Damn! He was in trouble.

She shifted close and used his shoulder as a pillow while spreading her arm across him.

Their intimate position had his heart racing. He could barely breathe.

“You love me so much, but you're a shy person…” She giggled. “Isn't that cute?”

Breathing deeply, Asher composed himself.

Who said Violet was the only lady his body would react to?

Right now, he felt like killing himself.

He could harm this innocent girl.

“Violet…” He called out, clenching his fingers to stop his hand from stroking her back.

Because he so much wanted to do that at the moment.

“What's the matter, Honey?” She stared at him eagerly, her eyes shining.

Asher groaned inside. He swallowed before saying, “I'll go on a business trip tomorrow. I’ll- I'll only spend a week. The maid will take good care of you.”

Her smile faded and a tear dropped from her eyes.
